Kyoto Station, a destination as well as a starting point Kyoto Station, which is served by the Tokaido shinkansen line, is the ideal starting point for exploring all of Kyoto's attractions, as well as for reaching all of Japan's major cities. The station itself is a modern structure where you can eat and shop to your heart's content, including a full floor of ramen restaurants and an Isetan department store. Kyoto has a population of about 1.5 million and welcomes about 50 million tourists every year. It is the second largest railway station in Japan, after Nagoya. To reach Kyoto from Tokyo station, it takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes by shinkansen high speed train, on the most direct line. If you land at Haneda airport or Narita airport, it takes about 20 minutes and one hour respectively to reach the city. From Kansai International Airport, the Haruka Express train will take you to Kyoto Station in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Kyoto Station is also on the Karasuma subway line, which runs through the city center.
